Sports Fitness Fashion Shoot – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

This is it! It feels like flying. The first step you take really is so invigorating I just had to create and entire shoot around the feeling of running.

This shoot took place just off of Fulton Street in San Francisco inside the trails of Golden Gate Park close to one of my favourite cafés Velo Rouge. Believe it or not there are loads of trails all along the perimeter and throughout the park to glide through and forget that you’re in a city. I really wanted this shoot to feel like you were in a forest following a runner on her daily run.

Kristel my model is a well experienced runner. She frequently runs up and down the hills of Oakland and Marin. She runs several marathons a year and even ran the highly regarded Boston Marathon. If you don’t know that marathon is no easy thing to get into. You need to run a previous marathon in a fast enough time to qualify as well as beat out other people in your age category to be able to get in.

I also wanted to incorporate stretching into this piece as it is such an important part of running. In fact I believe it is just as important as the run, otherwise without it you can sustain some pretty nasty and nagging injuries. It’s not worth it, just stretch. I loved the colors that Kristel wore as she stood out from her surroundings as she flew through the trails.

The running community of San Francisco is so close to my heart I just love doing running shoots. Thank you Kristel for being a part of this shoot it was such a great experience!

How To Shake Up Your fitness Routine – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

TRACK! It’s the easiest most simple answer to becoming stronger, and shaking things up. There are so many things you can do at a track to really become better at whatever sport you do.

Stair repeats. Go up one staircase and then down another and do an entire loop of the track. That’s going to really get you going and get your glutes engaged.

Sprints or interval training. Doing this really pushes your oxygen levels and trains you go to faster.

Timed Mile. If you want to know how fast you run, run a mile and then at about 45 seconds to a min to that and that is your average minute per mile run.

For this shoot the Lana was our model from STARS.  Ana Dahlman from Melange Mode was the stylist and really did an amazing job. I thought the backdrop of the salmon sand colored track would pose a problem for having the clothing stand out, but Ana found the perfect outfits to compliment our model and the scenery. Olga was our hair and make up artist for our shoot and kept fly aways and pony tails in check. Our afternoon started out sunny with blue skies but the fog that looms over Golden Gate Park started creeping in about an hour into our shoot. On this shoot day there was a huge track and field meet for the local schools but we managed to photograph Lana and avoid the swarms of kids running their little hearts out.

Golden Gate Park Running Photoshoot – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

My shoot with Leija from SCOUT was pretty spectacular. Little did she know she was going to be jumping, bounding and leaping all over Golden Gate park when she arrived for her fitting and hair and make up prior to our shoot.

Our day was a grey, overcast San Francisco day, however, the images we created were full of lush and vibrant color as stylist Nicole Busch of Nicole Blair Wear pulled some of the most fabulous clothing to compliment our scenery. My hair and make up artist was the talented Tacha Scott Santana the owner of Dream Girl Make Up Institute.

For this shoot I wanted to create images of a runner, but not in the usual fashion. I didn’t want to just track a runner and fire away. I wanted to do something different. So for this shoot I had Leija jump over top of me while I layed on the ground. This resulted in fantastic images. Other times I had her bounding over logs so that you could see real exertion and true expression while running. One of my favourite photos is of Leija running next to a late with the tall trees in the background. I feel it reflects her long lean figure and stride.

I couldn’t do the shoots that I do without my fantastic team and am greatful for all the help and collaboration they provide on the shoots. Thanks so much ladies! You’re the best!

How to stay motivated to exercise – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

You’ve heard it all before I’m sure. You need to exercise every day to stay healthy. Well, what if it’s just too hard for you to do that on your own.

The answer is easy. Exercise with a friend, or a group. For years I used to run on my own. Mile after lonely mile I would run the streets of San Francisco in preparation for my races either here or other cities. After a while I wondered if I could learn more and get better if I trained with a group. Five years ago I joined the San Francisco Marathon Training program and learned quickly that training with a group of other people is possibly the best way to stay fit and stay motivated to keep running. Having a goal of a race that you are all training for together really is a no brainer. I’d been a cross country runner in high school and after a year in the program I learned so much that the following years I’ve been a pacer for new trainees in the group. Here I help runners learn how to properly train for a marathon and to know what to do about injuries and maintain good health throughout the training process. I can honestly say that there has been no better way for me to keep running than to sign up for a race and run with my group. The camaraderie and support you get from a group is unmatched.

For this shoot I worked with the lovely Gina from Stars and Lito from Scout as models. My stylist was the amazing Jenn Bonnett. I could not be happier with the outfits she selected. A lot of thought needs to go into sports fitness clothing selection as there is not much room for error.
