How to stay motivated to exercise – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

You’ve heard it all before I’m sure. You need to exercise every day to stay healthy. Well, what if it’s just too hard for you to do that on your own.

The answer is easy. Exercise with a friend, or a group. For years I used to run on my own. Mile after lonely mile I would run the streets of San Francisco in preparation for my races either here or other cities. After a while I wondered if I could learn more and get better if I trained with a group. Five years ago I joined the San Francisco Marathon Training program and learned quickly that training with a group of other people is possibly the best way to stay fit and stay motivated to keep running. Having a goal of a race that you are all training for together really is a no brainer. I’d been a cross country runner in high school and after a year in the program I learned so much that the following years I’ve been a pacer for new trainees in the group. Here I help runners learn how to properly train for a marathon and to know what to do about injuries and maintain good health throughout the training process. I can honestly say that there has been no better way for me to keep running than to sign up for a race and run with my group. The camaraderie and support you get from a group is unmatched.

For this shoot I worked with the lovely Gina from Stars and Lito from Scout as models. My stylist was the amazing Jenn Bonnett. I could not be happier with the outfits she selected. A lot of thought needs to go into sports fitness clothing selection as there is not much room for error.

Check out the images from the shoot below.

Three ways to de-stress from your work week – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

You’re exhausted, you work far more than the 40 hour week, you feel like you can’t take it anymore. Believe it or not, exercise is really going to help you out. Here in San Francisco we a lucky to have so many wonderful places to get outside and shake out that stress. I had the opportunity to photograph Michelle Lew Libay a coach for the San Francisco Marathon training program Run 365 on a cozy socked in with fog morning down at Ocean Beach. We met at 6am at my apartment, looked over her clothing that we had talked about before the shoot, then head down to the beach. When we arrived, I was so excited to see how cloudy and grey it was. Perfect for running and perfect for photography. We grabbed our clothing and I grabbed my cameras and we head down to the water. I showed Michelle my inspiration images of how I saw the shoot and I was snapping away. Michelle was in such a positive mood, no wonder she is a coach for the marathon. I bet her trainees just love her and her encouragement. Stride after stride Michelle knocked every shot out of the park (or ocean, in this case).

So here are my tips to de-stress from your work week.

1. Exercise. Go for a run, a swim, a bike ride. Do something to get your mind off of work. Even if it is just 30 minutes. It will help lift your spirits, and refresh your mind.

2. Meditate. The age old practise of clearing your mind is so valuable, especially if you know you won’t be able to get away on a mini break. Give yourself 10 minutes a day in silence to breathe, and practise.

3. Friends. Call a friend, go for a walk, or get a meal together. Talking to someone who is not in your industry really help shed some outside light on things and can help you through the tough times.

New lifestyle fashion work – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

I was so happy to work with Jenn Bonnett for my lifestyle fashion photography shoot.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

lands-end-sanfrancisco-california-lifestyle-fashion-photography-lizcaruana

I’ve been pining over doing a shoot in the Lands End area of San Francisco for years and finally found the right stylist to work with me on it. Jenn and I spent many an hour brainstorming concepts and coming up ways to have the shoot look effortless and fun.

I think we really succeeded on this one as all the elements came together. We had fantastic models, great weather, and gorgeous scenery. If you’ve never been to Lands End, it literally is the Lands End. There is no more San Francisco at this point. It sits atop steep cliffs and never ending stair cases with epic views of the beach, the ocean and the Marin Headlands. In San Francisco on a clear warm day, it doesn’t get much better than this. Our models came from both Scout and Stars and proved to be great choices. Our hair and make up artist was Tacha Scott Santana owner of Dream Girl Make Up Institute. Tacha always does an amazing job and I could not be happier with the work she does.

When putting together a shoot with multiple models it’s really important that the girls match. This can be pretty challenging as they not only need to match height wise photographically, but they also need to be able to instantly connect so that they portray that they are friends. Lucky for us we keep a pretty light atmosphere on set and everyone became fast friends. I wish I could do this shoot over again except without the camera so that I could hang out and enjoy the beautiful sunset at the end of the day.

Thank you ladies for an amazing photoshoot. I couldn’t have done it without this amazing team that I get to work with!

How to choose photos for a photo contest – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

This time of year is especially hard for me as it’s time for the APA Something Personal 2014 Photo Contest.

top-sanfrancisco-lifestyle-and-sports-fashion-photographer

potrero-hill-sanfrancisco-lifestyle-fashion-photography

What’s so difficult you may ask. The choosing! I’m always stumped as to what to submit. As a long time APA member you’d think it would be easy to figure out what your favourite or best work of the year is to share with your peers in a photo contest that will be judged by your peers, and then exhibited at the holiday party in front of your pees. No pressure or anything. Sheesh! So what do I do when I’m faced with this plague of indecision? Procrastinate! Just kidding. But really, what I actually did was I decided to choose my favourite shoot and put it up on my facebook page ask for help from my peers. Yep, it sounds a little bit like cheating, but it’s not. Why not ask for help when you need it. It’s especially important to a lifestyle fashion photographer like myself when you create literally hundreds of photos, making the final selects is exhausting and riddled with tough choices.

This shoot was with Achok from Scout Models. W25 magazine picked up the photo story and published it in their online and print magazine. I had an amazing team. My wardrobe stylist was Nikki Grattan from In the Make and my Hair and Make up Artist was Tacha Scott Santana of Dream Girl Make Up Institute. I mean, yeah, this stellar team makes the whole deciding tough!

So, with that said, I will share the photo shoot that I feel is my top lifestyle fashion photography shoot of the year. Who knows, I may post another shoot tomorrow if I get cold feet. But for now, here’s what I love the most. Let me know in the comments section what your favourite photos are!!!

How to nail a Mountain Biking Shoot – tips from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion sports and fitness fashion photographer

How DO you nail your sports mountain biking shoot? Simple. Get the fearless Richard Soriano to bike down the hills of Pacifica. I can’t tell you how lucky I was to meet Richard. He is a superb mountain biker, but also a really nice guy too. Throughout the shoot we had to walk up 2 miles of steep inclining hills. Hills so steep that if you fell you were in for a few cuts, bruises and bumps. And also likely to keep skidding downwards till you hit a flat plateau.

So the shoot was not as easy as add Richard Soriano and presto you have an amazing shoot. Finding time with this man is tough. He keeps himself busy at his sports medicine clinic Action Sports Medicine. Here he helps you recover from your injuries and get you back out there. Once we were able to find a date that fit his schedule we planned out his outfits. I did a location scout the week before to make sure the terrain visually stimulating. Yes, yes indeed it was. Richard made the suggestion and he really nailed it. It was fantastic. Then, I asked him to send me images of his clothing as I always like to see what people are wearing so that I can match it with their background. Or more so, I like to have people pop out from their background, so I had him wear the opposite color on the color wheel when possible. I had example posing images with me on my phone and lined them up with the location shots I had taken the week before. Richard brought his expertise to the shoot and we really developed the ideas I had into something was superb!!

I really am so happy with these photos and lucky that he is represented by FoxRacing, as his clothing is emblazoned with their cool logo. Thank you so much Richard for the great shoot. Enjoy the photos from our shoot together.

Coporate Headshot photography tips – from a top san francisco headshot photographer

So you’re looking for new headshots for yourself, or you’ve been tasked to find a photographer to shoot the entire office. What do you do? Get on google and do a search to see who you can find, or you get recommendations from colleagues?

Matt Mullenweg san francisco corporate headshot photography

Well, there are many routes you can go, but most go with recommendations from colleagues and then follow that up with looking at the photographer’s work.

So here’s where the decision part lies. When you’re looking at this photographer’s work what do you see? Their ability to photograph studio, location, office, or something different. Then look a little deeper and look at the photographs themselves, how intense is the photoshop? Do you want your photos to have that level of photoshop, do you want to look natural? These are important questions as if you see this reflected in all the photos, it’s likely that this person does this as their style. Over photoshopped was the thing of days past, today, it’s natural, clean and as close to what the person actually looks like.

Take a moment to look through my corporate headshot photography gallery to see the versatility in my work and to see how natural people look.

If you or your office needs need photos be in location or studio, contact me at lizcaruana@gmail.com to book your shoot.
