Questions To Ask When Choosing a Photographer, Top San Francisco Corporate Headshot and Event Photographer

Questions To Ask When Choosing a Photographer, Top San Francisco Corporate Headshot and Event Photographer

When considering a new photographer for any project, you should be focussed on more than just the look and feel of their images. Obviously, the end product is important and is often what attracts new clients however, the process should be equally weighted.

That’s why I have provided a list of questions and why they’re important to ask when considering a new supplier for your corporate headshot or event photographer.

san-francisco-corporate-headshot-and-event-photography
  1. When are you available? Seems like a no-brainer, but a photographer’s availability says a lot about them. If you’ve left things to the last minute (pro-tip: avoid at all costs!) and have a requirement for next week, any photographer that has immediate openings should be considered a red flag. A great photographer is usually in high demand and has a schedule booked weeks and months out. The caveat is that a great photographer is also a pro at balancing their schedule and will be honest about whether they can accommodate your request, however last minute it may be. A good rule of thumb for event photography is to start your search for photographers the minute you’ve secured your venue and dates. As for headshots, a 1-month lead time can usually be accommodated but the longer, the better.
  2. How many headshots can you cover in 1 day? We’re aiming for quality over quantity and the client needs will dictate how efficient I can be. Location changes, natural elements, wardrobe changes are all things that will add to the time it takes to capture your team’s headshots. In short, there is no magic number but trust that I work efficiently once set up!
  3. What is your rate? Budget is a common consideration when working with photographers. Be sure to ask whether they charge a day rate (and if so, how long their day is) or if they charge an hourly rate? When production assistants are required, is that included in the overall rate or are they to be paid separately? It’s vital to remember that with all things in life, you get what you pay for. Cost considerations for the photographer that are factored into their quote include equipment (lighting, cameras, backdrops, props, boxes, tripods & more), assistants, travel time, working time, editing time and more. Keep that in mind when reviewing quotes for photographers and remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  4. When will I receive the images? Again, the answer to this isn’t cut-and-dry but the bottom line is that I’m flexible. Be up front about your expectations and deadlines and I’ll do my best to work within those timelines. Considerations should be made for projects requiring more post-production time as well as photos delivered in multiple formats.
  5. How many images will you provide? My job as your photographer is to weed through the hundreds to thousands of images I shoot and only provide you with the best. I don’t want to overwhelm you with every single frame I shoot and will exercise my professional judgement in selecting the images you see. As for a specific number, it usually works out to roughly fifty percent of what I capture, and even in that there are duplicates that are weeded out for being too similar.

Sports Fitness Fashion Shoot – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

This is it! It feels like flying. The first step you take really is so invigorating I just had to create and entire shoot around the feeling of running.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

golden-gate-park-trail-running-photography-lizcaruana

This shoot took place just off of Fulton Street in San Francisco inside the trails of Golden Gate Park close to one of my favourite cafés Velo Rouge. Believe it or not there are loads of trails all along the perimeter and throughout the park to glide through and forget that you’re in a city. I really wanted this shoot to feel like you were in a forest following a runner on her daily run.

Kristel my model is a well experienced runner. She frequently runs up and down the hills of Oakland and Marin. She runs several marathons a year and even ran the highly regarded Boston Marathon. If you don’t know that marathon is no easy thing to get into. You need to run a previous marathon in a fast enough time to qualify as well as beat out other people in your age category to be able to get in.

I also wanted to incorporate stretching into this piece as it is such an important part of running. In fact I believe it is just as important as the run, otherwise without it you can sustain some pretty nasty and nagging injuries. It’s not worth it, just stretch. I loved the colors that Kristel wore as she stood out from her surroundings as she flew through the trails.

The running community of San Francisco is so close to my heart I just love doing running shoots. Thank you Kristel for being a part of this shoot it was such a great experience!

How To Shake Up Your fitness Routine – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

TRACK! It’s the easiest most simple answer to becoming stronger, and shaking things up. There are so many things you can do at a track to really become better at whatever sport you do.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

kezar-stadium-golden-gate-park-sanfrancisco-running-photography-lizcaruana

Stair repeats. Go up one staircase and then down another and do an entire loop of the track. That’s going to really get you going and get your glutes engaged.

Sprints or interval training. Doing this really pushes your oxygen levels and trains you go to faster.

Timed Mile. If you want to know how fast you run, run a mile and then at about 45 seconds to a min to that and that is your average minute per mile run.

For this shoot the Lana was our model from STARS.  Ana Dahlman from Melange Mode was the stylist and really did an amazing job. I thought the backdrop of the salmon sand colored track would pose a problem for having the clothing stand out, but Ana found the perfect outfits to compliment our model and the scenery. Olga was our hair and make up artist for our shoot and kept fly aways and pony tails in check. Our afternoon started out sunny with blue skies but the fog that looms over Golden Gate Park started creeping in about an hour into our shoot. On this shoot day there was a huge track and field meet for the local schools but we managed to photograph Lana and avoid the swarms of kids running their little hearts out.

Thank you so much ladies for an amazing shoot. I could not do what I do without you.

Golden Gate Park Running Photoshoot – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

My shoot with Leija from SCOUT was pretty spectacular. Little did she know she was going to be jumping, bounding and leaping all over Golden Gate park when she arrived for her fitting and hair and make up prior to our shoot.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

golden-gate-park-sanfrancisco-running-sports-fitness-photography-lizcaruana

Our day was a grey, overcast San Francisco day, however, the images we created were full of lush and vibrant color as stylist Nicole Busch of Nicole Blair Wear pulled some of the most fabulous clothing to compliment our scenery. My hair and make up artist was the talented Tacha Scott Santana the owner of Dream Girl Make Up Institute.

For this shoot I wanted to create images of a runner, but not in the usual fashion. I didn’t want to just track a runner and fire away. I wanted to do something different. So for this shoot I had Leija jump over top of me while I layed on the ground. This resulted in fantastic images. Other times I had her bounding over logs so that you could see real exertion and true expression while running. One of my favourite photos is of Leija running next to a late with the tall trees in the background. I feel it reflects her long lean figure and stride.

I couldn’t do the shoots that I do without my fantastic team and am greatful for all the help and collaboration they provide on the shoots. Thanks so much ladies! You’re the best!

How to enjoy a relaxing weekend – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

If you ever what I dream about at night, I’ll tell you. It’s running up and down the mountains of the Marin Headlands. This is what I consider relaxing on the weekend. Running or hiking the hills of Marin.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

As a marathon runner myself, training on the streets can be pretty exhausting, but when you give yourself that break to get out on the trails, it’s like you’ve refreshed your entire running perspective. I’m a huge advocate for running, fitness, and sports. In fact each year I run at least one marathon and one half marathon. More if I can fit it into my schedule for training. I love running so much that my husband and I even went on a mini break to run from our home in San Francisco to the Pelican Inn in the Marin Headlands. It was only a 14 mile run, but up and down the trails made it to be quite the adventure. I didn’t bring my camera on that run, but I did photograph the lovely Therese from Stars Model Management to show you just how beautiful this part of Northern California is. My stylist for this shoot was Ana Dalman of Melange Mode and Olga was my hair and make up artist was. Ana did a spectacular job picking out Therese’s clothing to stand out perfectly from the background and compliment the motion she was performing. Olga was on the ready fix any fly always and touch up any shine as both are so common on a sports fitness shoot.

New Sports Lifestyle Fashion Photo Shoot – from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

It’s not frequently that you get to work with an amazing team of models, stylists, and hair and make up. I was lucky to have the trifecta of awesomeness for my shoot on Treasure Island in San Francisco.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

treasure-island-sanfrancisco-lifestyle-fashion-photography-lizcaruana

Kaitlyn and James were our models and they showed us their skateboarding skills. Kaitlyn had never been on a skateboard before but picked up how to ride quickly and was zooming all over the streets. James jumped on and off the board showing us how high up he could get. Stephen Candelino was the stylist and boy oh boy can this man style. The clothing he brought was like a dream from the 80s and 90s. A good dream. A very very good dream. I’m quite fond of both of those eras as they represented my youth and some of the best days I was a youngster. One of my favourite outfits James wore was a florescent pink pull over and white pants. James said he felt like Zach Morris in the outfit. I would have to agree. Katilyn wore so many great outfits it’s hard to choose a favourite. But, if I really did pick a fave it would be her high waisted jean cut off shorts, teal tank, grey vans, and skater ball cap. She was fab. Tacha Scott Santana owner of Dream Girl Make Up Institute was our hair and make up artist and kept Kaitlyn’s hair in place on the super windy island.

This shoot was pretty darn great. I love getting to work during the golden hour and chasing the sun all over the island. I had scouted the island the week before and narrowed down some spots that I thought would look great for shooting. The day of proved to be a little challenging as some of the locations had cars and other things in place that weren’t there before. The people on the island were so nice. They noticed were were doing a shoot and moved their cars so that we could take some photos and even invited us to use their restrooms if we needed. So nice!

Thank you so much you spectacular, amazing, wonderful team! I couldn’t have done it without you!
